Lamps: Your Connection to Beautiful Ambience

The right mix of lamps will enhance your home lighting in a way that is useful and personalized. A variety of lighting sources Schonbek table Lamp customized to your needs make your home comfortable for your family and guests; unique lamps add style to your decor in unexpected and practical ways.

Consider the Scale

The size of your room and type of furniture in your decor is important to consider when selecting lamps. Enhance large rooms and sizeable pieces of furniture with large lamps that stand on their own as strong elements in the room. Smaller table lamps add soft lighting to dark corners or provide task lighting exactly where you need it.

Mix Decor Styles for Interest

Whether your decor is traditional or contemporary, make a design impact with lamps that express bold style. The contrast of a traditional lamp in a contemporary room is a whimsical choice; a sleek, modern lamp provides the same eclectic appeal in the traditional home. Layering your decor with unique elements adds interest and allows you to express your personal taste.

Choosing Lamps

When choosing lamps for specific types of ambient or task lighting, it is imperative to choose lamps that provide light exactly where you need it. A too-bright reading light produces glare, and a bedside lamp that shines into your eyes defeats your goal of soft bedroom ambience. Table lamps are an ideal choice for end tables next to beds or couches, and floor lamps adapt to many locations around your home.

6 Tips for Choosing the Right Light Bulbs

Perhaps you just installed a new chandelier in your dining room, or simply need to change burned out bulbs in lighting fixtures around your home. Whatever your reason is, it is important to consider the following 7 tips for choosing the right light bulbs.bulb-160207_640

1. Wattage: Wattage refers to the amount of energy a light bulb can produce. Each lighting fixture in your home has a maximum amount of wattage that it can withstand. For most light fixtures the range of watts is between 40 and 120. When you start shopping around for light bulbs it is crucial to pick ones with the appropriate amount of wattage for the fixture. If the wattage is too high this will cause damage to the fixture as well as create a fire hazard.

2. Lumens: Lumens is the amount of a light that a bulb will produce. The higher the amount of lumens in a light bulb, the brighter the light is. When choosing the right light bulb for your fixture you will want to consider how bright the room needs to be. For large spaces you will want a bulb with a higher amount of lumens. For reading lamps, you can go with a lesser amount.

3. Shape: Generally, choosing the shape of your light bulb is at your discretion, but some fixtures require a specific shape in order to fit and operate properly. The most common shapes of light bulbs are the generic bulb shape, A-shaped, or spiral shaped.

4. Life Expectancy: Although the initial purchase price of your light bulbs is relatively small, it is important to consider the cost of your utilities for the life span of those bulbs. For fixtures that aren’t used as frequently incandescent bulbs are the cheapest choice, but also have the shortest life span. LED bulbs are more expensive initially, but have a life expectancy of up to 50,000 hours.

5. Light: When you go to buy new light bulbs, you want to purchase ones with the type of light appearance that is appropriate, and best illuminates each room of your house. There are several color options to consider for light bulbs from warm white, daylight, to cool white.

6. Mercury Content: While mercury content will not affect how you use the light bulb or the type of light it will produce, it is important to check the packaging of any light bulbs you are considering. Light bulbs that contain mercury cannot be thrown in the trash, so if you choose to buy them it is necessary to find a safe way of disposing them.

Home Lighting For The Gaming Family

There is little doubt that video and computer-gaming is popular these days, but for family togetherness or a festive atmosphere going back to the more traditional concept of games can bring life to the party.

Defining the focal point of the room, you should adapt your lighting around it. If you have a billiard table, for example, it will have to be properly lite not only to emphasize the table, but to ensure proper lighting for playing the game as well. You may choose an old-fashion, Tiffany chandelier affect, or perhaps something more modern in chrome, depending upon the decor of the room. Billiard table fixtures are generally multiple-light in nature, with a minimum of three bulbs.

The card table may be used for canasta or bridge, but may also be used for board games accommodating children and adults alike. A hanging chandelier may be in order here as well, but perhaps something with a softened globe as to not particularly shine in the face, rather lighting the entire area.

Many rooms may have an abundance of light during daytime hours, where additional lighting would only augment that provided by nature. You may consider dimming switches that allow minimal effect during the day, but more pronounced lighting at night.

By using outdoor lighting in the following ways you will make your home an inviting and safe haven for your family and guests.

Highlight Your Home’s Features

Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor Lighting

  • Outdoor lighting can help you highlight the aspects of your home that can boost its curb appeal. Consider adding lights to pathways, entryways, and around driveways. This will create clear lines into the entrance of your home and help prevent stumbling at night. It will also create parameters separating your yard from your neighbor’s. Outdoor lighting can also be used to highlight garden and patio areas. This creates an inviting space to entertain guests when you barbecue on summer nights. It also allows you to utilize this space no matter the time of day, and gives the kids a chance to still play in the yard even after dark. Outdoor lights act not only as visual aids in dark spaces, but also can add color and texture to your garden when placed next to vibrant flowers or water features.

Safety and Security

  • Adding outdoor lights to your home will not only increase its curb appeal, but also increase security. This is especially important during the summer when you are away on vacation. Houses that are well-lit are less likely to attract burglars and decrease vandalism. Having a well-lit entryway will help you feel more secure getting home late at night, or having guests over who are new the area. Outdoor lighting also helps you navigate the outside of your home at night, preventing unnecessary falls.
